Sweet Tart Fizzy Bath Bombs

Create a fizzy bath bomb that releases grapefruit essential oil and moisturizing sunflower oil as it bubbles away in your bath or shower. Watch the video to learn what causes the blast of effervescent, fizzy bubbles. Have fun!

TOOLS:

Mini Tart Pans

Beaker or Mixing Bowl

Gloves (recommended)

Spatula or Spoon

Balance (optional)

INGREDIENTS:

250 g / 1 cup Baking Soda

125 g / 1/2 cup Citric Acid

60 g / 1/4 cup Corn Starch

0.5 g / 1/10 tsp Red Coloring (Optional)

60 g / 1/4 cup Sunflower Oil

4.5 g / 1 tsp Grapefruit Essential Oil (optional)

Distilled Water

Rubbing Alcohol

PROCEDURE:

Step 1: Blend Baking Soda, Citric Acid and Corn Starch together and mix until uniform.

Step 2: In a separate container, mix the Sunflower Oil, Grapefruit Oil and red coloring.

Step 3: Add the liquid to the powder and mix until a uniform “wet sand” is formed. Spritz with a small amount of water (or rubbing alcohol) if the mixture is too dry. Do not add too fast or too much because the bath bomb will fizz prematurely.

Step 4: Press the powder into the mold and spritz the top with alcohol if desired. Let the bath bomb dry overnight. The longer it sits in the mold, the more it will set up and harden.

Step 5: Slowly remove from the mold.

Makes 8-10 bath bombs

How to Use: Add to warm bath water and watch it fizz! Enjoy the invigorating scent of grapefruit oil and moisturizing properties from the sunflower oil.

Ingredients: Sodium Bicarbonate, Citric Acid, Zea Mays (Corn) Starch, Sunflower Oil, Citrus Grandis (Grapefruit) Peel Oil, CI 15850 (Red No. 6 D&C Lake), Castor Oil

Pro-tips

  1. You can substitute the sunflower oil with another oil such as olive oil or vegetable oil.

  2. You can use a cupcake or muffin pan for the bath bomb mold. You may need to carefully work it out of the mold using a spatula or plastic knife.

  3. Use silicone soap molds or bath bomb molds in place of the mini tart pan. I loved the mini tart pans since they’re cute and work well for my local workshops.

  4. The coloring can be added directly to the powdered mixture. Work it in with your hands to distribute evenly. (I used a natural red extract (from my day time job) that adds a beautiful color.)

  5. Use your favorite essential oil in place of grapefruit essential oil. Make sure to use recommended usage levels.

  6. Read safety and handling instructions and labels for each ingredient that you use. Although most of the materials are used in food, do not eat them or your bath bomb.
